Appendicitis is a common disease in each period oflife.
Most frequently, appendicitis occurs in childrenand adolescents.
Histologically serous, phlegmoneous, ulcerous and perforated forms are differentiated.
These forms usually reveal thickening andenlargement of the tubular organ, whereas chronicor neurogenic forms do not alter the size of theappendix; therefore, neither can usually be diagnosed by imaging.acute appendicitis.
Important signs for acute appendicitis are pain at the Mc Burneyโs point, axillaryrectal difference of the temperature.
In laboratorytesting, signs of acute inflammation are present.
TheC-reactive protein (CRP) is usually elevated, and leucocytosis is often present.
Clinical evaluation usually gives significant hints for pathology in the rightlower quadrant; however, specificity in diagnosingacute appendicitis is limited.
Of all surgically treatedappendices, 30โ50% do not reveal acute appendicitisat histology.
The accuracy in clinical evaluation ofacute appendicitis is especially low in young womenand older patients
